Teen Programs
We love our teens who have been onboard with us for three and four years and are looking for a little variety in our offerings! Teens are welcome aboard anytime, especially during our teen-only weeks of July 2-6 and July 9-13, 2011.
SECOND ANNUAL OVERNIGHT AT CRANE ESTATE
July 2-6, 2012
We will spend Monday, July 2, through Wednesday, July 6, doing some long-time favorite activities like fishing, fishing and more fishing as well as exploring the Isles of Shoals, sandeeling, and bottom sampling. And, of course, swimming!
Then, we will get a new view of our home waters of Ipswich Bay from the vantage point of Crane’s Beach and Castle Hill!
On Thursday July 5 we will do a beach invasion of the Crane Estate in Ipswich for an overnight adventure hosted by the trustees of reservations, concluding Friday afternoon.
Activities at the Crane Estate may include:
- Camp in the Pine Grove (includes camp fire)
- Hike the Grand Allee at night
- Tour the Great House and visit the roof
- Swimming in Ipswich Bay
- Tide pool at Cedar Point
- Explore the Great Marsh and Fox Creek
- Hike the dunes and maritime forest of Castle Neck
- Visit Choate Island in Essex Bay
The 2,100 acre Crane Estate is comprised of Castle Hill, Crane Beach and the Crane Wildlife Refuge. The Estate was established in 1910 by Richard T. Crane Jr., a rich Chicago industrialist who bought what was then a modest salt water farm and transformed it into a grand seaside retreat for his wife and two children. It includes several miles of white sand beach and wind sculpted dunes, a maritime forest, many acres of salt marsh, mud flats and tidal creeks, several islands in Essex Bay, well manicured lawns and formal gardens, an Italian-style farm complex, the Inn at Castle Hill and, finally, the Great House, a 59-room national historic landmark and museum.
Throughout the week, field lessons and conversations will go more in depth and allow for more hands-on participation to build advanced level skills as we recognize teens have varied and diverse interests, and we love that!
In addition, kids who are interested in receiving academic credit may pursue additional study during their week onboard. This optional onboard course “Field Marine Biology of the Gulf of Maine” is geared for high-school level learning. This is an immersion in marine science, and requires an additional independent study in order to receive academic credit. Newburyport High School Students may receive elective credits, for optional participation in the onboard Field Marine Biology of the Gulf of Maine course. Students attending other schools must arrange credit with their district; of course we will help to do so!
This program for teens ages 13 and older runs M-F 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. during the week of July 2-6, 2012. (Pick-up on Friday, July 6, is at 2 p.m.) This special week is limited to 18 teens to offer plenty of elbow room onboard the Erica Lee for all activities afloat and ashore. Grab a group of friends and join us!
Cost: $545
PLUM ISLAND TEEN WEEK July 9-13, 2012
We’ll spend a week of BOAT CAMP aboard the Captain’s Lady boats. We’ll do plenty of fishing as well as plenty of swimming and exploring the Gulf of Maine with BOAT CAMP crew onboard, including visiting some new places we do not traditionally visit with the Erica Lee, including Star Island at the Isles of Shoals. We will also spend time this week doing some marine science field work that will become part of a world-wide database of marine life. If your teen is curious about a career in marine biology, this is your week!
This week is sponsored in part through the Summer Science in New England program through the New England Aquarium and the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). All of our teens will be offered the opportunity to attend an Ocean Summit in October 2012, to meet with teens throughout New England who were involved with the Summer Science in New England program. Our partners in this program include the New England Aquarium, Seacoast Science Center, University of Rhode Island, Project Oceanology and the Census of Marine Life.
Program runs Monday through Friday, 8:30 to 4 p.m. and costs $425.
If either week is not convenient to your summer schedule, teens are welcome to join us on any of our other week-long programs.
