John O' Leary and Capt. Rob Yeomans.

Courses offer PDPs or Graduate Credit from Salem State College
Department of Education.

Survey of the Merrimack River Estuary/3 graduate credits:
Four Sundays--May 4, May 11, June 1, June 8
(Registration is open! We have 6 spots still open as of 4/30/08)

Through field experience, class work and research, participants in this course will survey the lower portion of the Merrimack River and its surrounding estuarine environment. On four Sundays, teachers will travel aboard the Erica Lee and develop Scientific (biological, physical, and chemical) and Social (historic and current) profiles of this rich ecosystem. In keeping with BOAT CAMP Inc.’s mission of “Building Ocean Awareness…” teachers will be required to develop standards based lessons/unit of study that will engage students and connect them to the this valuable maritime resource. (This need not be a science lesson.)

Cost: $625 for 67.5 PDPs or $775 for 3 graduate credits.

Water Analysis of the Merrimack River/3 graduate credits:
Four Sundays--June 29, July 13, July 20 & July 27

From aboard the Erica Lee, conduct scientific experiments to analyze the water quality of the Lower Merrimack River. Field sites will be established at key points in the river and like ‘real’ scientists develop vertical profiles. This data will serve as our base line for all future experiments. The course pays particular attention to water chemistry but also Physical properties such as temperature and the currents set up by these interactions. It incorporates and reflects upon data from Woods Hole Marine Biological Laboratory scientists who are also studying the Merrimack River estuary.

Cost: $625 for 67.5 PDPs or $775 for 3 graduate credits.

Field Marine Study of Coastal Ecosystems:
Four days--August 18-21

From aboard the Erica Lee, survey the ecosystems of the lower portion of the Merrimack River, coastal Plum Island and Ipswich Bay, the Isles of Shoals and Rockport’s Thacher Island. Particular emphasis will be paid to the rocky intertidal zone, fishing & fishing industry and the gull rookery. For four days in August, teachers will travel aboard the Erica Lee and develop Scientific (biological, physical, and chemical) and Social (historic and current) profiles of these rich ecosystems. Teachers will be required to develop standards based lessons/unit of study that will engage students and connect them to the this valuable maritime resource. (This need not be a science lesson.) Additional program description and details will be announced in early spring.

Cost: $625 for 67.5 PDPs or $775 for 3 graduate credits.
